Descom supplies Stockmann with its new online store
e-Business solution provider, Descom Oy, has provided Finland’s leading department store chain, Stockmann, with its major new online store –www.stockmann.com – which opened for business at the end of September. Descom was responsible for the technical design and implementation of the site, working in close cooperation with Stockmann’s IT department.
One of the key priorities in the design of the Stockmann online store has been to give users a great retail experience. Product photographs, for example, are of a high standard and the site makes finding and browsing products very easy. The site also enables customers to choose the most convenient channel for receiving their orders, by mail, from the customer service department at the Stockmann department store in Helsinki, or a pick-up point.
A high standard of performance was another design priority, as the online store must be able to deal with large numbers of users simultaneously. Stockmann is also committed to further improving the range of services and products on offer at the online store in the future.
Consumers expect a high standard of service
“The Stockmann online store sets a new standard for Finnish webstores,” says Tero Junttila, Descom’s Director, eCommerce and Product Information Management. “Finnish retail chains, including the most well-established ones, are now beginning to make major investments in e-business solutions. Competing on price is no longer enough to differentiate yourself, more and more companies realise the importance of providing a good retail experience as well.”
Customers expect a high standard of service, whether they buy online or in a physical shop. A good online retail experience depends on a number of factors, including high-quality product information and product images, easy browsing and search functions, and rapid multichannel delivery options.
Online and physical stores complement each other. A number of customers, for example, like to check out product details online but prefer to buy in a physical shop. Customers also expect a similar standard of information online to that which they can get from expert staff in a shop.
“Companies that are serious about their online stores are looking for a strong technology platform and an expert partner. They also want technology that has the potential to offer them a broader range of services in the future as their needs grow. A successful online store calls for long-term development, and knowing the business in question is a particularly important factor here,” says Junttila.
Descom has extensive experience in the e-Business field. In addition to Stockmann’s online store, Descom has supplied systems to a number of other major customers, including Finland’s largest online store to Hobby Hall and a joint internal portal for the Siwa, Valintatalo, and Euromarket retail chains.
